Alamuchy, NJ – Police departments in Sussex and Warren counties are investigating a string of antisemitic flyers being distributed around the area. These flyers are placed inside plastic baggies and may also contain rat poison.
Taste, a restaurant on Johnsonburg Road in Allamuchy, is one of the locations where these bags were found. They have also been around near several homes.
Police were called to Taste Wednesday around 7:30 a.m. for reports of a suspicious package found in the parking lot and a second one found on the sidewalk.
Officials say that the baggies contained antisemitic literature, along with pellets. Those pellets were either rice, corn kernels or rat poison. The flyers list the names of top-level scientists and economists who may be Jewish. There is also a QR code that leads to a website filled with antisemitic speech.
Residents say the biggest concern is for the kids in the community because more baggies were found near homes adjacent to Allamuchy Township Elementary school and at least one found on school property.
“We have kids going to school. There’s a school right down the street, and God forbid, a kid picks it up or a dog eats it. It’s just something that hopefully the authorities will figure out real quickly,” says Taste owner Daniel Santos.
Police in nearby Byram say similar packages were found there. Police are asking the community to be on alert and to call them to remove the baggies if they happen upon one of them.
Authorities say that these baggies have also been found in other parts of the country and the FBI is investigating.
