Verviers – The city of Verviers, in the Walloon Region, in Belgium, announced that it refused any possible future link with Israel because of the situation of the Palestinians.
The municipal council voted in this direction last Tuesday.
The decision is symbolic, however: Verviers had previously had no ties with Israel.
The approach aims not only not to engage in a link with the Israeli state, nor also with companies that support the country.
“It’s a preventive approach which ensures us of not being complicit”, declared the socialist Malik Ben Achour. “We are committed to this as long as the apartheid system lasts,” he added.
The measure was passed by the PTB, the Ecolo party, and the PS.
