Spain – Survey on antisemitism and perception of the State of Israel in Madrid

– The survey, carried out in 5 locations in the Community of Madrid between the months of April and May by Sigma Dos for ACOM, addresses the perception of the existence of antisemitism in Spain, and the opinion on the State of Israel.

– Seeking regional geographic diversity, it has been carried out in five of the largest towns in the region: Alcalá de Henares, Alcorcón, Majadahonda, Móstoles and San Sebastián de los Reyes, with a total population of 739,728, representing 12% of the population of the Madrid Community.

– The sample includes 3,100 interviews with adults in the aforementioned locations.

– In order to obtain a detailed picture of the ideological profile of the respondents, questions related to the intention to vote for the next municipal and regional elections have been incorporated into the form.

– The orientation of the vote has been structured around the main competing candidacies in said municipalities: PP, PSOE, Más Madrid, Vox, Podemos and Ciudadanos. Strictly local candidacies have been ignored in the final results presented here.

– Those who most think that there is antisemitism in Spain are those who see themselves least reflected in it, being the most prone to demonize the Jewish state with clichés and prejudices. On the other hand, those who least recognize Spain as an antisemitic country are more naturally inclined to accept Israel as a democratic and guaranteed state.

– But, in general, the negative perception of Israel, the permanent criminalization and dehumanization of the Jewish State, implanted in public opinion by decades of activism and misinformation from the media and academia, unfortunately prevails in Spanish public opinion.

Respondents were asked three questions related to antisemitism and Israel:

“ Do you think that antisemitism (hatred of Jews) currently exists in Spain?”

“ Of the following statements that I indicate below, which one do you agree with the most?:

a) The state of Israel is a country that does not respect the rights of non-Jewish citizens.
